When Sonata Arctica played in Cleveland last month, Tony Kakko stopped by WRUW to do this interview with me. I've been a fan of the band for a long time, going all the way back to Ecliptica.

In the early days, I interviewed Tony a few times on the show, so it was really great to finally meet him in person and talk about Stones Grow Her Name (#2 Album of 2012 in my list) Highlights of the interview were hearing about how he got started, his songwriting process, and his work, from Sonata Arctica to Northern Kings to singing Christmas songs in a tux. He's a busy guy!

While I'm used to recording artists and putting them on the spot, I was taken by surprise when Tony pulled out his iPhone and fisheye lens to record footage for his tour diary. As you can tell in the video, this was a new experience, and all I could manage was a meek 'Hi' while setting up the studio to record the interview. I've linked to that video below, along with a few photos of Tony down at the station. A big thanks to him for doing the interview - it was a very cool way to end a great year!

Very cool interview. I just love Tony and Sonata Arctica! I have followed them for ages and grown into their music along with them and love every album. Thank you for having them and posting the interview. And THANK YOU for not adding music. I cannot tell you how annoying that is. I know it promotes the music, but serious as a listener hearing the voice, you just want to hear what he has to say.

Thanks for the feedback, Marina. Since I do a radio show, I always play music in between segments, so that takes care of promotion. On the site, though, I've always tried to keep it simple. I too am a big fan of SA and Tony's writing, so I really enjoyed the chance to talk to him. I'll have to post some of the old interviews I've done with him, too.

That would be awesome! I love these interviews! Can't seem to hear much from bands like SA. I followed since seeing them in 2001 in Koln, Germany. I can't remember exactly. I lived in South Africa and pestered them to come there but you have to big to play there. Don't live there anymore, in Edmonton now and see them everywhere in Canada. I would love to hear more! Please keep them up, for a while anyway. You did a great job asking him interesting questions. Thank you!
